Shahid Afridi produced one of his most memorable cameos in Pakistan colours, smashing two sixes in the final over to stun India in a group-stage clash of the 2014 Asia Cup at Mirpur. The all-rounder’s unbeaten 34 from 18 deliveries sealed a one-wicket victory with two balls to spare.
India, asked to bat first, posted 245 for 8 in their 50 overs. Rohit Sharma’s fluent 56 set the base, but Pakistan’s bowlers chipped away with regular wickets. Saeed Ajmal was the most effective, returning figures of 3 for 40. A late surge from Ambati Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja, who struck 52 off 49, gave India a competitive total.
Pakistan’s chase began positively through Mohammad Hafeez, who anchored the innings with a patient 75 off 117. His partnerships with Sohaib Maqsood and others gave hope, but India’s spinners triggered collapses at crucial intervals. Ravichandran Ashwin and Amit Mishra combined to put pressure on the middle order, reducing Pakistan to 203 for 6.
A mid-pitch mix-up between Maqsood and Afridi resulted in a run-out that shifted momentum back towards India. With 43 still needed from the last five overs and only the tail for company, Afridi was left as Pakistan’s only realistic hope.
He responded in trademark style. Jadeja was struck for a four and six in the 46th over, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar was punished with two more boundaries. However, wickets continued to tumble, leaving Afridi to carry the chase into the final over with nine still required.
Ashwin, who had bowled tidily for his 3 for 44, was trusted with the last six balls. His first delivery bowled Saeed Ajmal, leaving India on the brink. But Afridi cleared the ropes twice in succession — first off a short ball and then off one angled into his body to seal the match.
