At least 15 people were killed and dozens injured on Sunday after two gunmen opened fire on a crowd gathered to mark the first day of Hanukkah at the popular beachfront. Police identified the attackers as a father and son, with the older man dying during the incident. By Monday morning, authorities confirmed that 40 people were hospitalised with injuries, while two police officers were also hurt. The second shooter was wounded during the response.
Australian authorities described the incident as a targeted terrorist attack on Jewish Australians, sending shockwaves across the country and beyond.
In their joint statement, CA and ECB said they were “horrified” by the events and extended condolences to the victims and their families.
“Everybody at Cricket Australia and the England & Wales Cricket Board is horrified by the tragic events at Bondi Beach yesterday evening,” the statement read. “All of our thoughts are with the victims, their friends and families, the Jewish community and the people of Australia at this deeply distressing time. Our condolences go out to all those affected. We stand with you.”
Australian captain Pat Cummins also voiced his anguish, urging people to support emergency efforts. “Absolutely devastated by the horror last night in Bondi,” Cummins posted on Instagram. “My heart goes out to the victims, their families, the people of Bondi and our Jewish community during this time. If you can, please book an appointment to donate blood.”
Off-spinner Nathan Lyon, a Sydney resident, echoed the sentiment. “It was a horrific day for everyone involved,” he said, adding that thoughts and prayers were with those affected.
The tragedy has cast a sombre shadow over the ongoing Ashes series, with Australia and England set to meet in Adelaide for the third Test from December 17, Australia currently leading the five-match series 2-0.
