Shabdik Varma wins Independence Day Cup

MANGALORE: Shabdik Varma from Ujire won the Independence Day Cup Chess tournament organised by South Kanara District Chess Association on Sunday.
While both Shabdik and local lad Herman D Saldanha finished with 7.5 points each from eight rounds, Shabdik took home the title on a better tie-break score. Sakshath UK from Kaup, Aditya Pai and Swathi Bhat from Mangalore, six points each, finished third, fourth and fifth respectively.
In all, 70 participants from Kasargod, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada district participated in the event. Dr Jessy Maria Souza, president, SKDCA, and chief guest distributed prizes to the winners.
