Magnus Carlsen recalls Daniel Naroditsky’s unique brilliance
World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen has spoken emotionally about late American grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, describing him as a rare talent and a beloved figure within the global chess community. A week after Naroditsky’s sudden death at the age of 29, Carlsen reflected on his memories of playing against him and the controversies that shadowed the final phase of his life.
Speaking to ChessBase India in St. Louis ahead of the Clutch Chess event, Carlsen highlighted what made Naroditsky’s style stand out. “What was really interesting for me about playing Naroditsky was that he had a style that's very different from mine,” said Carlsen. “I can play very good positional moves quickly, but he was able to drum up attacks out of nothing. He would quite often actually checkmate me — that clash of style was extremely interesting.”
Carlsen also revisited the online controversy involving former world champion Vladimir Kramnik, who had accused several players, including Naroditsky, of online misconduct — claims made without solid proof.
Reflecting on that episode, Carlsen said, “When Kramnik started going after Hikaru (Nakamura), it already seemed crazy. But when he started going after Naroditsky so hard — that was horrible. I don’t think anybody thought Naroditsky was cheating. I was sorry for what he was going through and supported him privately. Probably should have done that publicly as well.”
The five-time world champion said the relentless online criticism deeply affected Naroditsky. “It had clearly taken him to a point where he was not in a great space,” Carlsen added. “It’s a great loss. It’s very sad for all of us that somebody who was such a resource to the chess community and had a universally high approval rating was led to that place.”
Carlsen is currently in the United States to compete in the Clutch Chess event, where he will face Gukesh Dommaraju, Hikaru Nakamura, and Fabiano Caruana.
