CHENNAI:
P Harikrishna
finished with 10 points, two short of winner Radoslaw Wojtaszek from Poland. Germany’s Vincent Keymer too finished on 10 points but Harikrishna took the second spot thanks to a superior tie-breaker score.
Harikrishna began the rapid category with a victory over
Michael Adams
in the first round. In round 2, Harikrishna got the better of
Arkadij Naiditsch
. Harikrishna then went on to have three successive stalemates with Studer and Keymer and Radoslaw.
The round 6 game against
Romain Edouard
saw Harikrishna at his very best - sealing the deal in just 27 moves. In the 7th round, Harikrishna drew with David Antón Guijarro. A win in the rapid section offers 2 points while 1 is given or a draw.
The classical format commences on July 21. It will award 4 points for a win and 1.5 points if the contest ends in a draw.
Harikrishna was understandably happy with his performance so far in the tournament. “I don't have that much time to think about how I played 7 games each day, but result-wise it is fine,” he told TOI.
