NAGPUR: Seasoned campaigner Vinay Barhanpure emerged champion in the Kamal Kumar Barat Memorial 5th Nagpur District Veteran Chess Championship, organized by the Nagpur District Chess Association, which concluded at the Dhanwate National College Indoor Hall here on Sunday.
Barhanpure along with Pramod Ramteke and BC Borkar secured five points each at the end of the sixth round.
However, on the basis of better tie-break scores Barhanpure was adjudged winner. Ramteke finished second, while Borkar placed third. Top seed Ravi Bhowte had to be satisfied with the fourth spot with 4.5 points.
In the sixth and final round, Pramod Ramteke drew with Vinay Barhanpure on the top board. Borkar took his points tally to five by outwitting Pramod Dhamgaye. Top seed Ravi Bhowte outclassed Vijay Thakur.
In all, 31 veteran players participated in the three-day tournament. The tournament was sponsored by Kaustav Barat in memory of his grandfather Kamal Kumar Barat.
The prizes were distributed by Vinod Kumar Trivedi, former president of NDCA and Dilip Kamdar, NDCA president. RN Shriwas, secretary, Vidarbha Chess Association, KK Barat, NDCA secretary, SN Parkhi, NDCA treasurer and Umesh Panbude were present on the occasion. Swapnil Bansod was chief arbiter of the meet.
