NEW DELHI: Viraj Sarawgi, a Grade 5 student at Royal Global School in Guwahati, Assam, has emerged as a rising chess talent, showcasing his skills at the prestigious Bangkok Rapid Chess Championship.
The tournament, held on Sunday at Kings College, Bang Phong Phang, Bangkok, witnessed the participation of around 250 players from seven countries, making it a highly competitive international platform.
Competing in the Under-12 category, Viraj secured an impressive silver medal, amassing 5.5 points out of 6 rounds.
His performance was particularly noteworthy as he entered the event as an unrated player but managed to defeat two seasoned FIDE-rated opponents, Kultungkijsaree Poom (1502) and Juntongjin Prin (1496). His only loss came against the tournament's ultimate champion, Ayan Mukherjee (1596).
