NAGPUR: City's only international boxer

Alfiya Khan Pathan

was the automatic choice in the Maharashtra youth team as no one turned up for trials in her (+81kg) category on Tuesday. She will be one of the title contenders from Maharashtra in the

youth women's national boxing championship

to be played at Sonipat, Haryana, from July 18 to 23.

Alfiya is all geared up and feels her practice in the last 60 days would be really helpful. "I feel my coach Ganesh Purohit sir has made me work hard in the last couple of months. It was all for the Asian Championship, for which the nationals are selection trials. Now, as I have been included in the state team, the focus shifts to Sonipat. I hope things will come out as per plan," said world champion Alfiya.

The Sonipat event is crucial for all boxers as winners of all categories will directly fly to Dubai for the Asian Youth Championship to be held in August 2021. The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) will not be conducting special nationals followed by trials owing to Covid concerns.

Maharashtra Boxing Association (MBA) conducted trails for youth men and women in Kridaprabodini, Akola, on Tuesday. A team of 12 members in each section was declared post trials.

MBA

secretary Rakesh Tiwari is confident of a good show in the youth section. "I am expecting at least three gold medals and overall seven medals in the youth women's section," said Tiwari. The trials for juniors were held in Pune on Wednesday.
