JAIPUR: Indian boxing faced an unexpected punch on Wednesday, when Olympian Akhil Kumar filed a criminal complaint of defamation against fellow pugilist Dilbagh Singh.
The case filed under section 499 and section 500 of the Indian Penal Code, was initiated by Akhil after Dilbagh accused him of 'manipulating' the selection trials for last year's World Championships.

The boxing fraternity was taken aback last year, when three boxers Dinesh Kumar, Praveen Kumar and Dilbagh accused the senior boxer of manipulating the trials and promoting his favourite Mandeep Jangra. Though, Dinesh and Praveen apologized later, Dilbagh refused to bow down. The Indian Boxing Federation (IABF) had even issued a show-cause notice to Dilbagh.
And now, after eight months, Akhil Kumar filed a case in the District court in Chandigarh.
"This was quite an insult for me. As a senior boxer, I have always promoted the game, and such allegations were unacceptable. I had initiated the steps to sue Dilbagh at that time only, but I waited for a few months thinking he would realize his mistake. But that never happened," Akhil told TOI, explaining the reason behind filing the criminal complaint.
Dilbagh, however, had no clue about Akhil's complaint. When TOI informed him about the issue, the boxer was surprised. "Maine kya bigada hai uska? It's quite surprising. I haven't received any letter yet," Dilbagh said.
