VIJAYAWADA: A minor classic — one for the future — played out in the final of the women’s singles at the 87th Senior National Badminton Championships here on Sunday.

SUBSCRIBE NOW!Capping her brilliant run here, Surya Charishma Tamiri, the 19-year-old local girl fought back after losing the first game to beat 14-year-old sensation Tanvi Patri of Odisha 17-21, 21-12, 21-14 in the final. The game set the template for the future of women’s singles in India, with the prowess of the likes of PV Sindhu on the wane.
In men’s, Rithvik Sanjeevi Sathish Kumar became the first shuttler from Tamil Nadu to win the singles title. He downed seventh seed Bharat Raghav of Haryana 21-16, 22-20 in the final. The women’s singles final was nothing short of dramatic.
Charishma was outplayed in the first game but she made some changes to her strategy to outclass Tanvi. In the second, Charishma won seven straight points from 5-6 to move to 12-6. Even in the decider, she took control after 12-12. Varying her pace and adjusting the length, the local shuttler kept the shuttle as back as possible, making Tanvi stretch backwards throughout the game. The promising Odisha girl, who trains in Bengaluru, could not get enough time to execute her game plan.
She also got a winner’s cheque for Rs 3.50 lakh from Badminton Association of India.
