Singapore Open: Satwik-Chirag in quarters; Sindhu out

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty prevailed over seventh seeds Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Ishfahani of Indonesia 19-21, 21-6, 21-19 to enter the men’s doubles quarterfinals of the Singapore Open BWF Su- per-750 tournament.

But PV Sindhu went down fighting to Chen Yu Fei of China 9-21, 21-8, 16-21.

Though Yu Fei is undefeated in their last 13 matches, Sindhu troubled her on Thursday. Sindhu looked in great touch against the former Olympic champion and even led 14-12 in the third game, but lack of confidence cost her the match.

Despite the loss, Sindhu will be pleased with her performance against Yu. Eighth-seeded Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand proved no match for Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian of China, losing 8-21, 10-21. Jia, the reigning Olympic and world champion, has a new partner this year.

HS Prannoy, the mixed doubles pair of Rohan Kapoor-Ruthvika Shivani and the women’s duo of Amrutha Pramuthesh-Sonali Singh lost their matches, making Satwik-Chirag the only Indian presence in the tournament. Prannoy failed to put up a fight against Christo Popov of France and lost 16-21, 14-21.

Rohan-Ruthvika lost to second seeds Tang Chung Man and Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong 10-21, 16-21.
