Rohan, Malvika, Ritika storm into Junior Badminton Nationals quarterfinals

NAGPUR: Rohan Gurbani, Malvika Bansod and Ritika Thaker continued their dazzling display to storm into the quarterfinals of the 42nd Junior (U-17 and U-19) National Badminton Championships at Guwahati on Saturday.
It was a perfect day for both the city shuttlers Rohan and Malvika. Unseeded in the U-17 boys singles, Rohan started the day in style by knocking out No.14 seed Karnataka's Tejas Kallolkar 21-19, 21-16 in 35 minutes.
Later in the evening, the 15-year-old Rohan caused a major upset when he stunned second seed K Sathish Kumar 21-13, 21-17. Rohan, a Standard IX student of Centre Point School, Katol Road, made the light work of Tamil Nadu's Sathish and recorded straight-game win in just 34 minutes.
Rohan, who trains at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy at Bangalore, will now square off against sixth seed Iman Sonowal of Assam on Sunday.
Similarly, Malvika maintained her unbeaten spree in both the U-17 and U-19 girls singles and booked her place in the last eight.
In the U-19 girls singles quarterfinal, 16-year-old Malvika will take on Dipti Kuity of Gujarat, while in the U-17 section, the city southpaw and second seed will face fifth seed Gayatri Gopichand Pullela of Telangana.
Second seeds Ritika Thaker and Simran Singhi advanced in both the U-17 and U-19 girls doubles category with ease.
However, it was curtains for other city shuttlers Mugdha Agrey, Rashi Lambe and Sourabh Kerhalkar.

U-19 boys doubles: 3-Sourabh Kerhalkar-Deep Rambhiya lost to Sai Pratheek Krishna Prasad-Qadeer Moinuddin Mohammed 21-7, 13-21, 16-21.
(Pre-quarterfinals) U-17 girls singles: 2-Malvika Bansod bt 10-Uthsava Palit 21-11, 21-14.
U-17 boys singles: Rohan Gurbani bt 2-K Sathish Kumar 21-13, 21-17.
U-19 girls singles (pre-quarterfinals): 11-Malvika Bansod bt 4-Amolika Singh 21-14, 21-14; Rashi Lambe lost to Aadya Variyath 15-21, 21-19, 22-24; 12-Mugdha Agrey lost to 2-Purva Barve 9-21, 19-21.
U-19 mixed doubles: 7-Akshan Shetty-Rashi Lambe lost to Swarnaraj Bora-Kanika Kanwal 19-21, 10-21.
U-17 girls doubles: 2-Ritika Thaker-Simran Singhi bt V Nila-V Sarumathi 21-10, 21-16.
