NAGPUR: Top seed Rohan Gurbani sailed into the quarterfinal in the Yonex-Sunrise All India Sub-Junior (U-15 and U-17) Ranking
Badminton tournament at the Balbir Singh Juneja Indoor Stadium in Raipur (Chattishgarh) on Friday.
Sixteen-year-old Rohan notched up two convincing victories to book his place in the last eight of the U-17 boys singles category.
Rohan started the day with a crushing 21-11, 21-9 win against qualifier S Rithvik Sanjeevi of Tamil Nadu in the second round.
Later in the day, he dispatched 12th seed Punshiba Yengkhom of Andhra Pradesh 21-15, 21-12 in 35 minutes.
Rohan will now clash with Tukum Laa of Arunachal Pradesh for a spot in the semifinal. Both Rohan and Tukum practice together at the Prakash Padukone Academy in Bengaluru.
Earlier in the first round on Thursday, Rohan thumped qualifier Saksham of Haryana 21-13, 21-11.
In the U-15 boys singles, Aditi Sadhankar lost against fourth seed Anupama Upadhyaya of Haryana 8-21, 7-21 in 15 minutes.
In an exciting U-15 girls doubles second round, Aasavari Khandekar and Aditi Tadas lost in three games 17-21, 21-19, 15-21 against AP’s Rashmitha Donepudi and Akanksha Matte.
Southpaws Aasavari and Aditi were trailing by 4-11 in the second game but staged a remarkable recovery to clinch the game 21-19.
In the decider too, Aasavari and Aditi put up a good fight but lack of experience might have cost them the match.
In the U-17 girls doubles pre-quarterfinal, top seed Srivedya Gurazada and Sai Shriya Yanamandra defeated Nagpur pair of Chaitali Nayse and Bhargavi Rambhad 21-10, 21-10 in 26 minutes.
