Both the teenage city
shuttlers
crashed out in the first round in their respective events. Given their brilliant form, both the shuttlers were hoping for a good result in the prestigious annualevent.
Saloni Samirbhai Mehta of Hong Kong edged out Malvika 22-20, 26-24 in 38 minutes. In an exciting U-19 girls singles, Malvika fought hard but could not cross the first round hurdle.
Another city shuttler Rashi Lambe also could not progress. In the U-19 mixed doubles first round, Rashi and Akshan Shetty lost against Canada’s Kevin Wang and Wendy Zhang 13-21, 14-21 in 25 minutes.
In the team championship held prior to the individuals, India failed to finish on the podium and lost 1-3 against Malaysia in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile in the Yonex-Sunrise All India Sub-Junior (U-13) Ranking badminton tournament at Tezpur (Assam) city’s only hope Krisha Soni bowed out.
In the U-13 girls doubles, Ankita Gogoi and Chilka Gogoi of Assam defeated Krisha Soni and Sarah Sharma (Jharkhand) 21-9, 21-10 in 30 minutes.
Earlier, Krisha and Sarah shocked fifth seeds Sri Vyshnavi SVS (Telangana) and Tanvi Sharma (Punjab) 21-18, 21-14 in the pre-quarterfinals.
In the U-13 singles second round, Krisha Soni lost to Mumbai’s Naishaa Kaur Bhatoye 7-21, 15-21 in 28 minutes.
Earlier in the first round, Krisha rallied back to edge past Maya Balamurugan of Tamil Nadu 19-21, 21-15, 21-19 in 40 minutes.
