NAGPUR:
Ashish Jain and Rakhi Chavan retained their singles titles in the Gaikwad-Patil International School Media Badminton tournament which concluded at the NMC Sports Complex, Vivekanand Nagar, here on Saturday.
The four-day tourney was organized by the Sports Journalists' Association of Nagpur (SJAN) in association with Nagpur Municipal Corporation.
Lokmat's Jain, who had clinched mixed doubles title with Meenal Jain on Friday, continued his fine form to grab men's singles crown too.
In the summit clash, he overcame his arch-rival Suhas Nayse of Times of India (TOI) 21-15, 21-14 to extend his reign at the top.
Earlier in the semifinals, Jain quelled the spirited challenge of Ameya Manke (Navbhharat) 22-20, 24-21 in an engrossing battle. The second semis was a one-sided affair with Nayse stopping debutant Farhan Quazi (Nagpur Today) 21-12, 21-13. Nayse was always in control of the situation and closed the match in straight games.
Jain, however, missed the triple crown as he suffered defeat in the men's doubles. New pair Ameya Manke and Mahesh Sarangi shocked Jain and Pravin Kathane 21-18, 21-15.
Top seed Rakhi Chavan of Loksatta lived up to her billing to retain the women's singles crown defeating her colleague Monika Chaturvedi quite easily.
MLC Prof Anil Sole, chairman of Gaikwad-Patil Group Dr Mohan Gaikwad, NMC sports committee chairman Nagesh Sahare and NDBA secretary Mangesh Kashikar distributed the prizes. Yonex has sponsored shuttles and T-shirts for the finalists and semifinalists. Kunal Dasarwar performed the duty as the chief referee of the tournament.
