NEW DELHI: Two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen smoothly advanced to the quarterfinals of the Asian Games boxing competition in Hangzhou on Wednesday.
In the women's event's second round, Nikhat secured a comfortable 5-0 victory against South Korea's Chorong Bak. Following two earlier setbacks in the day for Indian boxers, Nikhat's dominant performance provided a much-needed boost for the Indian camp.
Nikhat, after assessing her opponent, unleashed a flurry of punches, effectively utilizing her longer reach.
Although Bak made it challenging by moving around the ring, Nikhat managed to control the proceedings. She sealed the second round with a couple of well-placed left crosses.
After taking the opening two rounds, Nikhat conserved energy like she did in her previous bout, evading attacks by Bak to move to the quarters.
Earlier, record six-time Asian Championship medallist Shiva Thapa couldn't capitalise on a favourable draw as he was beaten comprehensively (5-0) by Kyrgyzstan's Askat Kultaev in the 63.5kg pre-quarterfinals.
In the second Indian bout of the day, Sanjeet (92kg) was completely outpunched (5-0) by world championship bronze medallist Lazizbek Mullojonov.
