How do people know if they had a past life?
How do people know if they had a past life?
How would they prove that they were someone else in their previous life?
Every new birth is intricately linked to the preceding life, marking a continuous connection. The roots of karma are sown in the past, and in the present life, they come to fruition. Can we not discern a distinction between the tiny seed and the bountiful ear of corn? Is there, not a profound correlation? Just as planting a millet seed signifies the actions of a previous life, its germination symbolizes the current existence. Moreover, if a seed happens to drop from this plant, the ensuing sprout will herald a fresh beginning, a novel incarnation.
From the aforementioned, it slowly becomes evident that one's present existence is a manifestation of causes from a past life. Every facet of one's life, encompassing physical attributes, desires, preferences, personal and social interactions, as well as encounters with various individuals, is intertwined with the repercussions of past-life karmic connections.
For example, a man walks along a road bustling with numerous other individuals, it is this particular person who falls victim to a snake bite. Why does this happen? It is due to a karmic account that needed to be resolved between them. When we encounter diverse circumstances in life, we begin to discern the underlying purpose behind the cycle of rebirth.
To validate the notion of being someone else in a past life, do you not find yourself engaging in actions that contradict your own desires? Frequently, one experiences a conflict between what they wish to do and what they ultimately find themselves doing. This predicament arises from the influence of past-life karmas, which shape the unfolding of events in our present existence.
People believe the effect to be the cause. These are merely previous life's causes. If anything done in this life were a cause, then why would you do something against your will? Furthermore, why would you say, "I did it," when you did not want to do it in the first place?
Dada Bhagwan clarifies that “What is the main cause of karma? What binds karma? Karma is bound because of the presence of doership. As long as there is a belief that 'I am John, one will bind karma. 'I am John’ is a deluded view (aropit bhaav); False attribution of the belief 'I am John, on the Self), and thus it becomes a doership.”
Hence people are perpetually stuck in cycles of birth and rebirth, through the cause and effect of karma due to the false understanding of ‘who am I and who is the doer’.
But the moment you realize ‘Who am I’ and ‘which entity is the doer’. Once you embrace the essence of your true Self, no new karmas will ensnare you. This transformation occurs when an enlightened One (Gnani Purush) awakens you to the awareness of your true Self - Pure Soul, which is free from all doership. Subsequently, new karmas cease to bind, while existing karmas continue their process of discharging. Once all karmas have been fully discharged, you will attain ultimate liberation - freedom from cycles of birth and rebirth.
