Jesus Christ proclaimed, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Evidently he did not mean biological rebirth but referred to
spiritual awakening into the state of Christ consciousness where the heavy and weary darkness of an unintelligible world is lit up. Kingdom of God is an elevated state of consciousness. Every Christmas reminds us of the divine mandate for our commune with Christ consciousness through spiritual rebirth or resurrection of Christ within, in silence.
Birth of Jesus by virtue of divine conception of Virgin Mary illustrates supremacy of Spirit over
Nature. Nature has its own course but the Son of God can go against the tide. We all need to be ready for divine conception within our heart for flowering of Christ consciousness. Spiritual Christmas has to take place within at the level of consciousness which alone can save us from the endless suffering prevalent within the absolute impermanence of worldly existence.
Christ has shown us the way, the
Truth to rise from the death of cosmic delusion. His simple way consists of spiritual
wisdom and divine love. Everything else flows from the same. While inexplicable wisdom assimilates truth divine love has the alchemy of transforming
life.
He was unwavering in assertion that spiritual ignorance is a curse and knowledge the wing wherewith to fly to heaven from the sphere of painful mortality. Significantly, the Buddha described enlightenment as the end of suffering and according to Maharshi Patanjali root cause of suffering is avidya or spiritual ignorance. Interestingly we notice that truth is singular but its expression is plural by different masters in different time and place.
Spiritual wisdom is never confined with the surface level of the intellect. Hence, despite being questioned by Pilate, Jesus maintained meaningful silence like the Buddha. The alchemy of transformation is hidden within the heart in divine love. Hence he told us to cultivate love for God with all our might, with heart and soul which alone can merge us with our Father in divine oneness.
Divine love manifests in mundane life as well. When an erring woman was decreed to be stoned, out of compassion he commanded that the first stone should be thrown by one from the mob who has committed no sin. Consequently the mob dispersed with shameful introspection. With wonderful compassion Jesus told the woman to go and desist from committing sin anymore. We should attempt to transform a wrongdoer by love. Out of this divine love and compassion flowed His miraculous last prayer on the Cross for forgiving his crucifiers.
Those who worship God in spirit and in truth invariably experience unconditional love and exhibit the same through spontaneous surrender to the Almighty. Jesus always presented himself as a perfect instrument in the hands of God to manifest His cosmic design. He paid no heed to protect his mortal body and exemplified his statement, “I can of my own self do nothing..... I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me....to finish His work”.
Jesus shifted focus from ceremonial worship to spiritual wisdom and divine love as God is spirit and love and those who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. Irrespective of being Christian or not we may facilitate resurrection of Christ within us, responding to the soul call of Christ, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.....and ye shall find rest into your souls.”
