Why does mental health treatment cost a fortune?

One of several cases counselled at Sarvalayam Mind Care in Chennai recently was that of a 30-year-old software engineer from Coimbatore struggling for several years with anxiety and depression, for which he finally sought professional help. Despite his high salary, he said he found it difficult to manage his monthly mental health treatment expenses. He was directed to have weekly counselling sessions, each of which cost him Rs 3,000. He was advised pharmacotherapy as well, which averaged around Rs 2,700 a month. Now, along with his anxiety, he began to feel overwhelming guilt about the burden of his condition on his family.But why is access to mental health treatment expensive?
