The Italian government has purchased a rare portrait by legendary Baroque artist Caravaggio for 30 million euros (about $35 million), marking one of the largest investments ever made by the state for a single artwork. The painting, created around 1598, depicts Maffeo Barberini, a nobleman who would later become Pope Urban VIII. The portrait was officially attributed to Caravaggio in 1963 and had remained in a private collection for decades.
