Even though Shiney Ahuja has been remanded to judicial custody till July 2 and his wife has hailed this decision of the court as one step closer home, the National Commission for Women has sent a three-member team to Mumbai to meet the teenaged domestic help who was allegedly raped by Shiney. They will discuss with the authorities, the measures that can be taken to prevent sexual and physical harassment of maidservants.
The NCW chairperson, Girija Vyas, spoke to us on her way to Mumbai. This case has been hyped up because it involves a Bollywood actor, but were going to Mumbai with an open mind. We will look into what action has the police taken, how can the victim be helped, and what is being done for her rehabilitation. I am going to talk to the CM, in fact, all the chief ministers of the country, because every government should be cautious, she said.
The NCW team will also be talking to various NGOs on this issue. We also need to look into how the law works in such situations and the role of society, added Vyas.
Will she be meeting Shiney as well? No. We would be meeting the victim, came her crisp reply. She added, But Bollywood has done a lot for the country and it should not be ashamed because of one person. We will be meeting people like Mahesh Bhatt. Weve also sent a recommendation to the government regarding how sexual harassment in the unorganised sector should come under the purview of the law against sexual harassment at the workplace. Presently, too many such cases of maids being sexually harassed in big cities and abroad are coming out in the open. Besides, there are cases of trafficking too, said Vyas.
