NASA astronaut Jonny Kim is preparing for his debut mission to the International Space Station (ISS) as a flight engineer with the Expedition 72/73 team, set to launch in March 2025. This mission will follow Sunita Williams' return to Earth.

Kim will embark on this mission aboard the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft, alongside Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky. The crew is slated to spend about eight months on the ISS, where they will contribute to crucial scientific research and technological innovations.

Jonny Kim: Mission overview

The launch, scheduled for March 2025, will see Kim and his team travelling to the ISS on the Soyuz MS-27. During their eight-month stay, Kim will participate in various scientific experiments and technology tests designed to advance future space missions and benefit life on Earth.

About Jonny Kim

Jonny Kim, selected as a NASA astronaut in 2017, has had a distinguished career as a U.S. Navy lieutenant commander, naval aviator, and flight surgeon. Before his astronaut training, he served as an enlisted Navy SEAL. Kim earned a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of San Diego and a medical degree from Harvard Medical School. His medical training included internships at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Since joining NASA, Kim has played several key roles, including lead operations officer for Expedition 65 and space station capcom chief engineer.

Sunita Williams' extended mission

Due to safety concerns with Boeing's Starliner capsule, NASA has decided to extend the return of astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams. They will remain in space until February 2025, continuing their duties as part of Expedition 71/72. They will return aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft with additional crew members assigned to SpaceX Crew-9. The Starliner capsule is scheduled to depart the ISS and make a controlled re-entry in early September.
