ESA's Vega deploys 10 satellites to revolutionize agricultural planning through space technology
In a significant stride towards enhancing Earth observation capabilities and advancing space technology, two cutting-edge satellites, THEOS-2 and Triton, were successfully launched into orbit, reported The European Space Agency. Additionally, a cluster of secondary satellites, including innovative CubeSats, were released during the same mission, adding further dimensions to our understanding of our planet and beyond.
THEOS-2 Enriching Thailand's Agricultural Planning:
THEOS-2, the Thailand Earth Observation System-2 satellite, is the latest achievement of a collaboration between Airbus and the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency of Thailand. This observation satellite, the larger of the two in its series, will play a crucial role in providing vital information to the Ministry of Agriculture in Thailand. It will supply data on water resources, weather patterns, and land use, enabling informed planning and management decisions.
Triton Enhancing Typhoon Forecasting:
Triton, previously known as FORMOSAT-7R, represents a significant milestone for the Taiwan Space Agency (TASA). This satellite will focus on collecting signals that bounce off the sea surface to calculate wind fields over the world's oceans. The data gathered will be shared with Taiwan's Central Weather Administration, greatly contributing to the accuracy of typhoon intensity forecasts and predicting their trajectories.
Sun-Synchronous Orbits for Precise Observation:
Both THEOS-2 and Triton were deployed into sun-synchronous orbits, ensuring that they consistently pass over the same Earth locations at the same times each day, effectively tracking changes over time and providing accurate and reliable information for various applications. Currently, the satellites are in free-flight mode, undergoing operational checks to ensure optimal functionality.
ESA's Vega Launch Vehicle and Secondary Satellite Deployments:
The launch mission was conducted using ESA's Vega launch vehicle, renowned for its capability to place medium-sized satellites into low Earth polar orbits. During this commercial flight, ten smaller secondary satellites were scheduled for deployment approximately 50 minutes after the main satellites' release. Confirmation has been received for eight of these satellites, with the remaining two pending confirmation.

- Proba-V Companion CubeSat: Flying at an altitude of 564 km, this satellite will perform co-observations of global vegetation alongside Europe's Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites, contributing valuable data for land cover and vegetation analysis.
- PRETTY (Passive REflecTomeTry and Dosimetry) CubeSat: This compact satellite will demonstrate its ability to measure sea ice and other parameters using global navigation system signals that bounce off Earth.
- ∑yndeo-1 and ∑yndeo-2 CubeSats: These CubeSats carry innovative technologies, including a plasma jet pack and an ultra-sensitive magnetic instrument. They are essential for testing state-of-the-art space technologies, some of which will be utilized in ESA's future LISA constellation for gravitational wave detection.
- ESTCube-2: Estonia's contribution to the mission, this shoebox-sized satellite will survey Estonian vegetation and conduct in-orbit testing of an 'e-sail' tether, which can alter its orbit to reduce space debris.
- Advanced Nanosatellite Systems for Earth-observation Research (ANSER): ANSER consists of three CubeSats working in close proximity to mimic a single satellite. Their collective efforts will provide valuable insights into water bodies' contents, including pollution levels and the presence of harmful microorganisms.
