Elon Musk says “I’d post it on X” if he found aliens and shares what thousands of SpaceX satellites reveal about UFOs
For centuries, humans have gazed at the stars and wondered whether we are alone in the universe. The question of extraterrestrial life is one of science, philosophy, and pop culture's most enduring mysteries. From cinematic portrayals to reported UFO sightings, speculation about aliens captivates the public imagination. Recently, Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla and SpaceX, weighed in on the question in a frank podcast discussion with Peter Diamandis' Moonshots, which was shared on YouTube on 6 January. Because Musk is directly involved in the exploration of space and oversees thousands of orbiting satellites around Earth, his perspective offers a practical insight into the likelihood of alien life.
Elon Musk is often asked the question of whether he has encountered extraterrestrial life. During his Moonshots interview, Musk immediately knocked down popular conspiracy theories that suggested governments secretly hide aliens. Musk clarified that if he had discovered even a shred of credible evidence of life out in space, he'd immediately post it publicly. "I'm asked all the time. and I'm like, look, if I were aware of the slightest evidence of aliens, I would immediately post it on X," Musk said, "because it would be the most viewed post of all time." It really speaks to Musk's transparency and how utterly improbable it would be to have any hidden alien discoveries in today's time, with millions of satellites surveying Earth.
Musk went even further to discuss why the existence of extraterrestrials wouldn't be greatly hidden by governments. In fact, he said, revealing alien life could be very strategic to justify military budgets. He explained, “They don’t have an incentive to hide the aliens; they have an incentive to show the aliens because they would not have any more arguments about the military budget if they seem a little bit dangerous.” This view opposed the general view of keeping governments' secrecy and suggested that public fascination and political utility would override incentives to cover up alien encounters.
A striking part of Musk’s reasoning comes from SpaceX’s satellite operations. The company currently manages approximately 9,000 satellites in orbit, monitoring space on an unprecedented scale. Despite this extensive presence, Musk emphasised that none of these satellites have encountered alien spacecraft. He said, “We have got 9,000 satellites up there, we have never had to manoeuvre around an alien spaceship…yet.” This observation underlines a simple reality: while UFO sightings make for intriguing stories, the scale and coverage of human technology in orbit suggest that any extraterrestrial presence would likely be detected, challenging popular narratives and reinforcing scientific scepticism around alien visitations.
This clip from a podcast spread quickly on X, and Musk reinforced his position with a straight-to-the-point quote tweet: “Yup.” This quote tweet was received positively by the public because it brought together Musk's experience on space-related topics and his characteristic dry sense of humour. This move brought up conversations on whether the public would genuinely be concerned with the possibility of alien life, from enthusiasts to sceptics. Musk explained that people would probably be curious but would carry on with their normal lives.
