Women's world no. 1 doubles tennis player Sania Mirza was given the TOISA Tennis Player of the Year at the inaugural Times of India Sports Awards.
NEW DELHI: Women's world no 1 doubles tennis player Sania Mirza was given the TOISA Tennis Player of the Year Award at the inaugural Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) held at Guragon on Thursday.
Sania, who has had a remarkable last year (2014) was nominated alongside Saketh Myneni, Yuki Bhambri, Ankita Raina and Sanam Singh in the category.
Sania is the most successful female Indian tennis player in history.
She was ranked India's No.1 player, both in singles and doubles, until her retirement from singles in 2013.
More than a decade after her debut on the tennis, she still carries the torch for women's tennis in the country. She has a very successful season in 2014, which can be termed as the best year of her career so far. In 2014, Sania playing with Cara Black won their first title of the year at the 2014 Portugal Open.
After that, playing with Bruno Soares she won the 2014 US Open Mixed Doubles title - her third Mixed Doubles Grand Slam title. Sania won a gold and a bronze at the Asian Games in Incheon. She paired with Saketh Myneni to win gold in the mixed doubles and playing with Prarthana Thombare she won a bronze medal in doubles event.
Black and Mirza won their biggest title together at the WTA Tour Finals in 2014, defeating Hsieh Su-wei and Peng Shuai 6-1, 6-0 in the final. It was the heaviest defeat ever in the end-of-season competition's doubles final in 41 years. Sania participated in the International Premier Tennis League, as member of the Micromax Indian Aces and played a key role for the Indian Aces to win the inaugural edition of the IPTL.
