Sweet nothings are passé as Hyderabadis open up to cakes that leave nothing to imagination. It was Rahul Sachdev’s first birthday after marriage and his wife planned a special dinner at home with a few close friends. He was in for a jaw-dropping experience when the cake was wheeled into the living room. The rectangular cake had a couple smooching, their bodies under cover, and the innerwear scattered on the bed.
“It was nothing I had ever seen before. Gosh, I was shocked to see that. That was so quirky. My friends still talk about it,” says Rahul about the experience.
Naughty cakes, with buxom women in bikinis, men and women in their birthday suits, in shape of a woman’s bust or a man’s…er… private parts, are adding a dash of risqué humour to parties — birthdays, anniversaries, bachelorettes and more — making them memorable ones.
Let’s have some fun: Shalini, who got a cake made in the shape of a woman’s upper torso for her friend’s bachelor party says, “It was a special day, so we wanted to do something different and that’s when we came up with this idea. When he saw the cake, he couldn’t help but laugh. The cake became the talking point of the party.”
But, sometimes the joke can fall flat or land the party folks in a tricky situation. Entrepreneur Megha Dinesh, got a cake designed that showed a naked man in a pool with some girls. “We got this offbeat cake made for a friend’s 30th birthday. It was a small party but to our surprise, the friend’s parents turned up at the party and we had to hide that cake! He ended up cutting cupcakes, instead,” says Megha, with a laugh.
Soaring demand: Bakers in the city say that they are constantly being approached for such quirky cakes. Prerna, who has made many such cakes, says, “The market is niche, but lately more people are opting for such cakes. Mostly, it is young working professionals or couples who want such naughty cakes for their friends or partners.” Explaining the reasons why these cakes are in vogue, another baker, Sharmista says, “The taste of people is changing. People watch TV, browse Internet and do their homework before coming with an order. Many a times, customers come with photographs to show what they want.”
A hush-hush affair: Though the demand is rising, like every other A-rated thing, adult cakes too are an undercover operation. Megha says, “Bakers don’t do these cakes openly as it might hurt their market. People feel uncomfortable talking about such things. Usually, customers get in touch with bakers they already know."
Sometimes, even bakers find these demands scandalous. Krishna, owner of a bakery in Jubilee Hills, says, “We don’t have adult-themed cakes in our catalogue. We have a separate menu for them and share it with customers only when they specifically ask for it.”
So, if you’re planning to get a customised adult-themed cake, make sure that the guest list is of like-minded people and everyone has his/her share of laugh.
