Why is red so powerful during Chinese New Year?
This year Chinese New Year will be falling on 17th Feb 2026 and will continue till 3rd March 2026. Interestingly, there’s one color that dominates the Chinese New Year celebrations: the color ‘red.’ But do you know why this color is one of the most prominent colors associated with the celebrations?
As per ancient Chinese texts, this color is one of the primary colors used in Chinese New Year celebrations and decorations, as it is believed to be a potent symbol of good luck, vitality, and protection, deeply rooted in ancient folklore and philosophy that promises prosperity for the year ahead. Moreover, it is believed that the red color’s fiery energy not only attracts good luck but can also easily ward off misfortune and negativity and bring in happiness, joy and abundance during the Chinese Lunar New Year festivities.
According to Chinese philosophy, red embodies the fire element from the five elements theory and is believed to ignite dynamic qualities like leadership, passion, and success to fuel personal and communal triumphs.
Another ancient folklore from China is associated with the red color. As per this folklore, it is linked to the Nian beast, which was a fearsome creature that terrorized villages on New Year's Eve, and to fight this beast, he was repelled by red-clad villagers, lanterns, and firecrackers, which established red as an eternal shield against evil.
Red's vibrant color is believed to scare malevolent forces. This is one of the major reasons that during the celebrations, lion dances with red costumes and home decorations are in the same hue. It is believed that doing so can create a protective barrier for families.
Adorning homes with red banners, couplets, and lanterns invites wealth Chi, symbolizing fortune as the color of the Han ethnic majority and a beacon for good tidings.
Hongbao—red packets filled with money—bless children and youth with luck, handed by elders to ensure health, happiness, and financial growth in the coming year.
Wearing new red clothes from head to toe sparks movement, love, and renewal, transforming the festive period into a burst of life-affirming energy.
Combined with gold and red paint on streets and homes, reinforcing communal harmony, optimism, and the cyclical triumph over winter's gloom.
