Uttarayan 2026: Significance

In Hinduism, Uttarayan is highly significant. Many devotees travel to Varanasi, Rishikesh, and Haridwar on this auspicious day to take a sacred dip in the Ganga. Thousands of tourists travel to Gangasagar in Bengal to partake in a sacred bath. North India celebrates it as Makar Sankranti, but Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra refer to it as Uttarayan. This day is known as Pongal in the southern Indian states.

One of the most sacred days is believed to be Uttarayan. All auspicious occasions, like as marriages, vows, yajnas, and new jobs, are believed to begin from this day. Kharmas comes to an end, and all the fortunate occasions will resume.

According to the Bhagavad Geeta, the six months of Uttarayan, when the Sun is at its brightest, are considered as the most fortunate. Anyone who passes away during this period either finds salvation or travels to Vaikunth Dham, the home of Lord Vishnu.
