To observe the Shradh rituals, food is offered in the name of the deceased ancestors.
Pind Daan and Tarpan are considered auspicious rituals and are performed by the eldest son of the family. By observing these rituals, thirst and hunger of ancestors’ soul are quenched. However, these rituals may seem cumbersome and expensive to many.
But there are simpler, inexpensive rituals to be followed during Shradh that also help to pacify the ancestors. These always invite good luck and wealth into one’s family. These rituals are as follows:
#1 Offering sesame seeds to brahmins
There are many reasons as to why one may be unable to perform proper rituals of Shradh – lack of time, sudden travel plans or simply be unaware. Therefore, by throwing some sesame seeds in flowing water and then offering a fist full of black sesame to Brahmins, is considered very auspicious.
#2 Feeding crows
Feeding animals and birds are considered very charitable in nature. During Pitru Paksha, offer food to crows. Ensure the food offered is broken into smaller bits for the convenience of the birds.

#3 Feeding Brahmins
This need not be an expensive or elaborate meal. It can be a simple meal of fruits, jaggery, a cloth and some dough.
#4 Make donations
In the case of untimely death of an ancestor, it is best to donate some clothes, utensils, and food on Sarvapitru Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya day. Offer special prayers to pacify all ancestors souls with Sarvapitru Amavasya Shradh Puja.
#5 Feeding a cow
When cooking lunch or dinner, keeping aside one chapatti for the cow is auspicious. Add sugar and curd to this and a Tulsi leaf. Then offer it to the cow.
#6 Worship Peepal
Mix milk and water and pour it over the roots of a Peepal tree. Offer salutations.
