Shattila Ekadashi 2023: Ekadashi is considered to be the most religious and spiritual day, which is dedicated to worship Lord Vishnu. Lakhs of Lord Krishna (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu) devotees observe strict fast and offer prayers. Ekadashi is observed twice on 11th day of Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha. As per Drik Panchang, this month, Shattila Ekadashi is going to be observed on 11th day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Magha i.e., on January 18, 2023.

Shattila Ekadashi 2023: Significance
Shattila Ekadashi is also called as Magha Krishna Ekadashi, Tilda Ekadashi. Shattila Ekadashi has a great religious and spiritual significance among Hindus. It is believed that the devotees, who donate sesame seeeds (Til) on the sacred day of Shattila Ekadashi, gets salvation and directly go to the Vaikunth Dham. It is believed that people should also offer Til to their forefather and ancestors.
Shattila Ekadashi 2023: Story
According to the Hindu Scriptures, One day Narad Muni visited Baikunth Dham to see Lord Vishnu and asked him about the significance of Shattila Ekadashi Vrat (fast). Lord Vishnu explained the importance of the fast shared a story with him.
A Brahmin's widowed wife used to live on earth and she was the biggest devotee of Lord Vishnu. She used to worship Lord Vishnu with great devotion and dedication. Once, she was fasting for one whole month to seek lord Vishnu's blessings. Her body became so pure and divine but she did not offered food to any Brahmin or deities. To make her realize the importance of offering food to Brahmins, Lord Vishnu himself visited to the lady disguised as Sadhu or Brahmin.
Lord Vishnu appeared in front of her on the day of Shattila Ekadashi and asked for alms then she brought a pile of mud and kept on his hands. He brought this back to his Dham. After some time, she died and came to Baikunth Dham. She was provided with a hut and a mango tree and seeing this empty hut she got worried and said even after worshipping Lord Vishnu with pure intentions, why I got an empty hut?? Lord Vishnu came to her and said that this is all happening as she never donated food to Brahmin or Sadhu. She realizes her mistake and sought for solution then Lord Vishnu asked her to observe Shattila Ekadashi Vrat then only the gates of her hut would open.
She then followed the fast rituals as explained by the Dev girls after that her hut was full of food items and everything which she needed and Lord Vishnu blessed her with the happiness and prosperity and the one who observe fast on Shat Tila Ekadashi and do charity and donate food to brahmins, gets blessings, wealth and salvation.
Shattila Ekadashi 2023: Precautions
1. Do not pluck Tulsi leaf on the day of Ekadashi as it is considered to be inauspicious. You can pluck it a day before Ekadashi and keep it in water over night to keep it fresh.
2. Do not eat non vegetarian food, onion and garlic as this food comes under Tamsik food items which is prohibited on this sacred day.
3. Do not consume alcohol and cigarette on this day.
4. Do not speak ill about others.
Shattila Ekadashi 2023: Puja Rituals
1. The devotees wake up early in the morning and take holy bath, wear nice clothes before commencing the rituals.
2. It is important to have firm devotion and dedication while performing Pooja.
3. The devotees worship Lord Vishnu and take a sankalp that they will observe fast with full devotion and they would not commit any sin.
4. The devotees place an idol of Lord Vishnu along with Shree Yantra, light a diya with desi ghee, offer flowers or garland and sweets.
5. People offer Panchamrit (Milk, Curd, Sugar (Boora), Honey and Ghee) along with Tulsi Patra to please Lord Vishnu and Tulsi Patra is the main herb which is offered to Lord Vishnu.
6. It is believed that without offering Tulsi Patra, pooja is considered to be incomplete.
7. The devotees must perform pooja in the evening just before sunset and offer bhog prasad to Lord Vishnu. They recite Vishnu Sahastranaam, Shree Hari Stotram and chant Lord Vishnu aarti.
8. Though the fast is fully broken on Dwadashi Tithi but people, who can not bear hunger, they can consume bhog prasad in the evening after performing pooja.
9. Bhog Prasad must be satvik - fruits, milk products and fried potatoes etc.
10. After performing aarti in the evening, one must distribute the bhog prasad among all the family members and must donate sesame seeds and sugar powder to the brahmins.
11. After distributing bhog prasad, devotees can break their fast by having satvik meal.
12. Many devotees observe strict fast and break their fast on Dwadashi Tithi after Parana.
13. The devotees must visit temple to seek blessings from Lord Vishnu/Lord Krishna.
14. In the evening, people should light a diya in Tulsi plant also.
