Purnima in May 2026: Date, moonrise timings, puja rituals and significance of Vaishakha Purnima
Purnima holds a great religious significance among Hindus. The day is dedicated to worship Lord Vishnu. On this auspicious day, devotees of Lord Vishnu observe fast from sunrise till sunset and perform Satyanarayan puja and Moon God is also worshipped on this day. The day is considered extremely powerful and sacred. Purnima falls every month on 15th day of Shukla paksha (waxing phase). This month, Vaishakha Purnima vrat is being observed today, May 1, 2026.
Vaishakha Purnima is one of the most significant days in Hinduism. The day holds a great religious and spiritual significance. On this auspicious day, people observe Satyanarayan vrat and worship to Lord Vishnu. The devotees of Lord Vishnu offer their sincere prayers to Lord Vishnu and express their gratitude. In order to take a holy bath in the Ganga, devotees travel to a number of places of devotion and the Ganga ghats for a sacred bath. On this auspicious day, Lord Buddha was born on this day so the day is celebrated as Buddha Purnima. Since Lord Buddha was born on this auspicious day, Vaishakha Purnima is one of the most powerful days and has particular meaning for Buddhists and Hindus.
On this auspicious day, devotees also worship Chandra dev, worship him, and seek blessings of the Lord. Devotees are believed to receive blessings from Lord Chandra through his heavenly rays. On this day, it is considered advantageous to visit the temples of Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna and offer prayers. Purnima is one of the most sacred day as it is believed that the moon's sacred rays falls on Earth on this significant day. Devotees also perform Satyanarayan puja and perform various puja rituals and spiritual activities to appease Lord Vishnu.
1. Take a holy dip in the Ganga River after rising early in the morning.
2. Take an idol of Lord Krishna, Lord Vishnu or Laddoo Gopal Ji.
3. Use gangajal, panchamrit, and regular water to give them a holy bath.
4. Place them on a wooden plank and offer tulsi patra.
5. One should not pluck tulsi leaves on purnima tithi; you can pluck them a day before.
6. Make panchamrit and offer it as a bhog prasad.
7. Observe fast from sunrise till sunset.
8. Perform puja in the evening also, recite Satyanarayan vrat katha, and perform aarti.
8. Prepare sattvik bhog, offer it to the Lord Satyanarayan and then break your fast.
9. You must offer water or arghya to Moon god and wish for your wellbeing before breaking your fast.
10. You can then break your fast after distributing bhog prasad among family members.
