Pitru Paksha 2020: Ashtami Shradh date, muhurat, & other details

According to the Hindu calendar, Pitru Paksha is a 16-day long period when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors, mostly through food offerings. The period begins from Pratipada (the first day) of the month of Ashwin and ends with the no moon day known as Sarvapitri Amavasya or Mahalaya.

Hindus consider Pitru Paksha to be inauspicious and given the death rite performed during the ceremony, which is known as Shraddha or Tarpana. Pitru Paksha has been known as various names — Pitri Pokkho, Solah Shraddha (sixteen shraddhas), Kanagat, Jitiya, Mahalaya Paksha, and Apara Paksha.
