Govardhan Puja 2020 date, time and significance

Govardhan Puja, also known as Annakut Puja, falls next day after Diwali Puja. This year, Diwali puja will be celebrated on Saturday, November 14 and the Govardhan puja will be performed on Sunday, November 15, 2020. As per Hindu religious texts, Govardhan Puja is celebrated as the day when Lord Krishna defeated God Indra.

On the day of Govardhan Puja, cereals like wheat, rice, curry made of gram flour and leafy vegetables is cooked and offered to Lord Krishna. People also worship cow on Govardhan Puja. In the Vedas, the cow is associated with Aditi, the mother of all the gods.

As per Hindu holy book Bhagavata Puran, Lord Shri Krishna who spent most of his childhood in Braj, lifted the Govardhan Hill on his finger to provide the villagers of Vrindavan shelter from God Indra's torrential rains.

In Maharashtra and other southern parts of the country, the same day is celebrated as Bali Pratipada or Bali Padva.
