Dhanteras is one of the major festival celebrated by Hindus. This festival is associated with wealth and prosperity. This year, Dhanteras will be celebrated on Friday, October 25, 2019. It also, marks the first day of Diwali celebrations.
The word Dhanteras is made of two words - 'Dhan' means money or wealth and 'Teras' represents the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksh, the dark aspect of the Lunar Month Kartik.
Dhanteras is considered to be the most auspicious day to shop for jewellery. It is believed that buying valuable products like ornaments, gemstones, and metal household products on Dhanteras brings wealth and prosperity to the home. People also buy silver or brass utensils and keep them in the East direction of their home. It is also said that buying a broomstick on Dhanteras signifies sweeping out poverty and misery from house.
On Dhanteras, devotees worship Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. On the evening of Dhanteras, devotees perform Lakshmi puja and light diyas.
