Bhishma Dwadashi 2024: SignificanceBhishma Dwadashi holds a great religious significance among Hindus. Bhishma Dwadashi occurs on Dwadashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Magha Month. As per Hindu Scriptures, Bhisma who was mortally wounded and was lying on a bed of arrows chose to leave the earth 58 days after the beginning of the Great War in Kurukshetra which is popularly known as Mahabharata. Bhishma was blessed with a boon that he can choose the day of his death. It is believed that he chose Magh Shukla Ashtami day to leave the earth.
On the day of Bhishma Dwadasi, Pandavas performed the last rites of Bhishma Pitamah on the banks of Ganga. It is believed that by performing Pitru Tarpan and Pitru Puja for the ancestors on the day of Bhishma Dwadashi is highly meritorious. Some people also perform Pitru Tarpan for Bhishma as he had no children.
