Where Chhatrapati Shivaji once prayed: This Pune temple keeps Maratha legacy alive
The Someshwar Temple is almost 900 years old, and it is still an important religious and historical site in the city. It's in a quiet part of Pashan. The big temple complex is about 3.5 acres big and is made of very strong black stone. It was built in the Hemadpanti style, which is how it has always been done. It shows how religious and cultural traditions have been passed down for hundreds of years.
People who visit the temple believe it has a swayambhu Shivalinga, which is a natural form of Lord Shiva. This makes it a sacred place to pray. A lot of people go to the shrine on Mondays in Shravan to pray to Shiva. The city is busy, but the prayers, rituals, and offerings that take place there make it feel like a calm place to be spiritually.
The temple is a very important part of history because it is part of the Maratha legacy. People in the area say that Rajmata Jijamata took her young son Chhatrapati to the shrine a lot. People say that Shivaji Maharaj did a lot to help the temple in the middle of the 17th century. This made it a more important place for people to pray.
As time went on, the complex grew and added smaller shrines for gods like Ganesha, Hanuman, and Bhairavnath. The tall stone walls that surround the temple make it look like a holy place that has been kept safe. The sacred banyan tree and the deepmala (lamp tower) are two religious buildings that make the area feel more holy.
A famous story about the temple says that hundreds of years ago, a cow mysteriously gave milk in a certain spot. This is how they found the Shivalinga. People still believe in the shrine jagrut, where they say the divine presence listens to their prayers.
The Someshwar Temple is still a popular place of worship and a living reminder of Pune's rich cultural and historical past. Tens of thousands of people visit the temple during important religious events.
