Udupi Sri Krishna Matha: The temple where the Lord turned himself to bless devotee at Kanakana Kindi

The historic Udupi Sri Krishna Matha is one of India's most important Hindu pilgrimage sites. Madhvacharya is said to have found the idol of Balakrishna, or child Krishna, inside a big piece of holy clay called gopichandana. Later, the idol was blessed at the Udupi temple, which became the spiritual center for devotees.



A unique darshan custom - The Kanakana Kindi

The Kanakana Kindi is a small window in the temple that lets people see the god. It is one of the temple's most unique features. The tradition has to do with the saint-poet Kanakadasa from the 16th century.

People say that Kanakadasa prayed very hard outside the temple walls because he couldn't get in because of social barriers. People say that the idol of Krishna turned to the west to give him darshan because he was so devoted. People have been able to see the god through the Navagraha Kindi, a silver-plated window with nine holes, ever since.

The paryaya and ashta mathas systems

The temple is run by the Paryaya system, which has eight monasteries called the Ashta Mathas. Each one takes turns running the temple's activities and rituals. Each matha takes care of the temple for two years.

One of the most important religious events in the area is the Paryaya festival, which takes place every two years. It is the ceremonial handover of power from one matha to another. People from all over India come together to see the elaborate ceremonies and parties that happen during the transition.



The annadana custom

The temple is known for its Anna Brahma tradition of giving away free meals to thousands of devotees every day. This is in addition to how important it is to religion. The temple has always been open to everyone and dedicated to helping the community.
