Trimbakeshwar Temple: The Divine Spiritual History of a Powerful Jyotirlinga
Trimbakeshwar Jyortilinga, which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, situated in Nashik, Maharashtra. This is one of the most revered temples of Lord Shiva that holds a great religious and spiritual significance in Hindu religion. The temple is also associated with the Nath yogic tradition especially connected with Guru Gorakhnath. He is known as one of the greatest yogis of India. Let's know more about this temple:
As the name suggests - Trimbak that symbolizes the three eyes. Trimbakeshwar Shivalingam has three faces representing trinity and that makes it unique because this place is known as the centre of cosmic energy. The followers of Shaiv believed that Lord Shiva manifested here in the form of three faced Shivalingam that represents creation, preservation and destruction. The temple Trimbakeshwar is considered as the most sacred place because Godavari river originates from this place. Godavari is also one of the holiest rivers in India. According to Shiva Puran and Skanda Puran, this sacred place is known as the place of penance or Tapasya Keshtra, where many sages performed strict penance to attain salvation.
In order to please Lord Shiva, the sage Gautama Rishi is believed to have once carried out a strict penance in the Brahmagiri Hills. Lord Shiva pleased by his devotion and appeared in front of him and his prayer for the divine river to fall from the heavens to the earth was granted. The area was blessed and endowed with prosperity, when the Godavari River, often known as the Ganga of the South, poured down from the Brahmagiri Hills. Because of this sacred belief, many devotees visit Trimbakeshwar in the hopes of receiving Lord Shiva's blessings and the holy river Godavari.
Guru Gorakhnath ji was a disciple of Guru Matsyendranath, known as one of the greatest yogis. He performed strict penance here. He was the founder of Hath Yoga and he was the one who made yoga popular in India. He also performed strict penance here to attain spiritual powers and supernatural abilities. Near the temple, there's a cave named as Guru Gorakhnath cave. This cave is very small but believed to have powerful divine energies. He used to meditate in the same cave. It is believed that Guru Gorakhnath performed the advanced yogic practices here that includes pranayam, breathing techniques and samadhi. It is believed that people who meditate here, feel spiritually charged and free from fear, ego and karmic blockages.
