Tirupati Tirumala Devasthanam, the wealthiest and one of the most revered shrines in India, is known for attracting millions of devotees yearly. Beyond its financial opulence, this ancient temple of Lord Venkateswara holds a wealth of mystical secrets that continue to fascinate and awe devotees and scholars alike. Here, we explore some of the most intriguing, lesser-known aspects of this iconic temple.

One of the fascinating aspects of Lord Balaji’s idol is his hair, which appears to be incredibly silky, smooth, and absolutely real. According to legend, the god lost some hair during his time on earth, and a Gandharva princess named Neela Devi offered her own locks to replace what was lost. This act of devotion led to a custom where devotees shave their heads before or after their desires are fulfilled at the shrine, symbolizing their devotion and connection to the divine.

The ritual offerings at Tirupati Balaji, such as flowers, clarified butter, milk, and holy leaves, are sourced exclusively from a mysterious village located around 22 kilometers from Tirupati. This village remains concealed from the public, and only its residents have access to it, safeguarding the purity and sanctity of the temple’s offerings.

While the idol of Lord Balaji may appear centrally placed in the sanctum sanctorum, it is actually positioned slightly toward the right side of the shrine. This positioning aligns with unique temple traditions and the spatial orientation believed to maximize the spiritual energy radiated by the deity.

Visitors who put their ear close to the back of Lord Balaji’s image have reportedly heard the sound of sea waves. This auditory phenomenon, despite the temple’s inland location, is one of the many mysteries that add to the divine aura surrounding the deity.

Inside the sanctum sanctorum, several earthen lamps burn perpetually. The origin of these lamps is unknown, and there are no records of when they were first lit or by whom. It is widely believed that they will continue to burn eternally, fueled by the faith of devotees over the centuries.

According to temple lore, Lord Balaji manifested physically in the 19th century. When twelve individuals were condemned to death by a regional king for a serious crime, their bodies were displayed on the temple walls. In response to this horrific scene, Lord Venkateswara himself appeared, reminding people of divine justice and compassion.

The back of Lord Balaji's idol always appears damp. Despite the priests’ efforts to dry it, a mysterious mist continues to form. This inexplicable phenomenon has puzzled many and continues to be seen as a sign of divine presence.

After the morning puja, flowers offered to Lord Balaji are disposed of in a waterfall behind the idol. The priests do not revisit the back of the deity throughout the day. Strangely, these flowers are said to resurface around 20 kilometers away in a place known as Yerpedu, adding to the temple's air of mystery.

The idol of Lord Balaji is smeared with camphor—a substance known to erode stone. However, despite this regular application, the idol shows no signs of deterioration, leading many to believe it is imbued with supernatural resilience.

One of the most astonishing aspects of the temple is the idol’s temperature. Despite the cool climate of the Tirumala hills, the idol maintains a warm temperature of around 110°F. Each morning after the Abhishekham (holy bath), droplets of sweat are seen on the idol, which the priests then wipe away with a silken cloth. The idol’s ornaments, removed during the weekly Thursday bath, are warm to the touch, reinforcing the belief that the deity’s essence remains alive within the stone.
