Purnima is one of the most auspicious days in Hindu religion and people observe this day with immense devotion and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu and Moon God. There are twelve Purnima observances in a year and Guru Purnima is one of the most prominent Purnima's. The day is dedicated to honor Guru (spiritual Guru, mentor, teacher, guide, parents, siblings and others).
