Thrissur Pooram is known as the mother of all Poorams. Thrissur Pooram is celebrated in the month of April and May and the Vadakunnathan temple hosts this celebration. This celebration attracts a large number of devotees.

Thrissur Pooram, is a festival which is celebrated with great enthusiasmm and fervor. It was started by Shakthan Thampuran, (the Maharaja of Cochin) who was the ruler of the Kingdom of Cochin from 1790 to 1805. The festival was first introduced in late 18th century. Thrissur Pooram is called as Mother of all Poorams because of the temple traditions, classical percussion and elephant pageantry and fireworks artistry. Thrissur Pooram is now so important and well-known that it draws both local and foreign devotees. The main deity is Lord Shiva of Vadakkunnathan temple.
When the moon lines up with the Pooram Nakshathram (star), Thrissur Pooram occurs during the Malayalam month of Medam. It holds a religious and cultural celebration that is widely celebrated throughout the state. Lord Vadakkunnathan, the presiding god of the Vadakkunnathan Temple, is honored with a ceremonial assembly of deities from numerous temples in and around Thrissur, which is the festival's high point.
Pooram is very important for the Keralites. Pooram is a spectacular event that is celebrated with fireworks all night long, vibrant Kudamottam, and well-known elephant processions. To take part in the spectacular celebration, the best elephants are transported to Trichur. The elephants march from the adjacent Thiruvambadi shrine to the Vadukunnathan temple on the last day. The Lord Krishna idol is carried by the group's principal elephant. The Goddess idol is carried by the group leader.
