According to Sri Rama Navami's history, Lord Rama was born on this day, and he was born to Dasharatha, the king of Ayodhya, and his wife Kausalya. Kausalya, Sumitra, and Kaikeyi were three wives of king Dashratha. He was deeply unhappy for the people of Ayodhya because he had no one to take up the charge of this kingdom in future. The great Rishi Vasistha (his Guru) once suggested him to perform the Puthra Kamesti Yagna in order to fulfill his desire to have a son. He offered his three wives a kheer to become pregnant after Yagna was finished.

According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Rama was born on Navami tithi of shukla paksha in the month of Chaitra.
