The festival of Mahashivratri, which honors Lord Shiva, is linked to a number of cosmic and spiritual occurrences. This celebration honors the union of Shiva and Parvati. On this day, Lord Shiva consumed the poison to prevent the world from being destroyed during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) and eliminated ignorance and darkness from the cosmos. He also performed the Tandava, the cosmic dance. On this auspicious day, devotees perform various puja rituals and spiritual activities to please Lord Shiva and seek his blessing on this very day. A large number of devotees visit different Shiva temples to perform abhishekam and offer prayers.

1. Wake up early in the morning Clean the house and puja room and take a holy bath.

2. Wear nice clean clothes and take a sankalp of observing fast from morning till the parana time.

3. Visit the temple to perform Jalabhishekam to Shivalinngam. many devotees perform Rudrabhishekam on this sacreed day.

4. Light a diya with desi ghee, light incense sticks and offer various other sacred items to appease Lord Shiva, perform Gathbandhan and offer shringar items to Goddess Parvati.

5. Apply sandalwood paste and decorate it with flowers and belpatra.

6. Many devotees perform abhishekam at home by making clay Shivalingam at home.

7. Chant mantras to invoke the idol and complete your puja by chanting the aarti.
