Govardhan Puja has a great religious and cultural significance in Hindu religion. This festival is also celebrated as Annakut. The day is considered extremely auspicious as it is dedicated to honor Lord Krishna. Govardhan Puja is being performed on Pratipada Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik i.e., on November 2, 2024.

Govardhan Puja 2024: Significance

Govardhan Puja holds a great religious significance among Hindus. This day is considered as one of the most auspicious day to worship Lord Krishna. This day is also celebrated as Annakut or Annakoot. On this auspicious day, devotees perform special prayers, sing bhajan and do kirtan to please Lord Krishna. They show their gratitude and seek protection and blessings of Lord Krishna. Cows are also worshipped on this particular day and people decorate them with flowers, bells, turmeric, put tilak on their forehead and feed them with green grass, chapati and jaggery.

The festival of Govardhan is mainly celebrated in Mathura where there is a Govardhan Hill and people circumambulate that hill and this ritual is commonly known as Govardhan Parikrama.

Those who are unable to visit Govardhan Parbat to circumambulate, they perform puja at home only and they bring cow dung, make an image of Lord Krishna holding a Govardhan hill from his little finger and perform puja to that image by putting tilak, offering flowers, offer kheel batashe and other sweets. Circumambulate this cow ding image of Lord Krishna for the 7 times and chant mantras or hymns.

Govardhan Puja 2024: Puja Rituals

1. Devotees wake up early in the morning and take a holy bath before starting puja rituals.
2. They first clean their house fully and the place where they want to make Lord Krishna image with cow dung.
3. After cleaning, bring cow dung at home and create a beautiful image of Lord Krishna along with Govardhan hill.
4. Light a diya with desi ghee, put tilak with roli and offer mauli, Kheel Batashe, sweets, fruits.

5. On this auspicious day, Annkut is prepared and that is a combination of mix vegetable and Kadhi chawal. This special bhog prasad is offered to Lord Krishna and it is famous in North India.
6. The festival celebrates the victory of Lord Krishan over Indra so this day is considered as the most significant day for performing Lord Krishna puja.
7. People light up their home with diyas and lights in the evening.
