Ganga Saptami 2026: In Hinduism, Ganga Saptami is regarded as one of the most auspicious days. Goddess Ganga is honored on this particular day. This day is also known as Ganga Pujan and Ganga Jayanti. It is believed that Ganga was reborn on this day. To commemorate Goddess Ganga's rebirth, Ganga Saptami is observed. According to Hindu Panchang, Ganga Saptami is celebrated on Saptami tithi of shukla paksha in the month of Vaishakha. This year, Ganga Saptami is going to be celebrated on April 23, 2026.

For Hindus, Ganga Saptami is a significant day. The Ganga is regarded as one of the most sacred rivers. The day is considered as the most auspicious days to worship Goddess Ganga. Ganga water is believed to have the ability to cure any illness. When devotees bathe in the Ganga, they are absolved of their previous transgressions. Ganga water cleanses the body and the psyche and shields against negativity. Ganga water is used by devotees for Shivaling Abhishekam. In order to achieve salvation, the ashes of deceased persons are also submerged in Ganga water. Goddess Ganga is known by several names, including Shubhra, Gange, Bhagirathi, and Vishnupadi, the name given to her, because she emerged from Lord Vishnu's foot.
According to Hindu scriptures, Goddess Ganga first appeared on earth on the day of Ganga Dussehra. However, Saint Jahnu drank all of the Ganga water, so all the gods and Bhagirath asked Sage Jahnu to release the Ganga. On the day of Ganga Saptami, Goddess Ganga reappeared, which is why this day is also known as Jahnu Saptami.
There is another story about Ganga Saptami. Once, the king of Kosala, Bhagirath, was upset that his ancestors were suffering from bad karma. He wanted them to be freed from this, so he strictly penanced Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma assured him that Ganga would come on earth and purify the souls of his forefathers, but he knew that the surge of Goddess Ganga could destroy everything. Lord Brahma then asked Bhagirath to worship Lord Shiva because he was the one, who could control the flow of Ganga, which is why Ganga is called Bhagirathi.
