Giving to charities and donations is considered meritorious. It is believed that taking a holy dip in the Ganga river will bring extraordinary blessings.
1. Before Suryodaya, or sunrise, people rise early and take a sacred dip in the Ganga River.
2. Offer prayers and water or Arghya to the rising sun.
3. While taking a sacred dip in the Ganga river, chanting "Om Namah Shivaye" will be meritorious.
4. A minimum of 10 dips are required; if not, a minimum of 3 dips should be taken.
5. Light a diya and present Goddess Ganga with flowers and sweets.
6. Some even present sarees or dupattas to Goddess Ganga.
7. On this specific day, people donate food, clothes and other useful items among the needy ones.
8. Donating clothes and food is regarded as extremely fulfilling.
9. In the evening, devotees take part in Ganga aarti.
