Kaalratri means "the one who is kaal, which means death, and Ratri, which means the night," she is the ferocious manifestation of Goddess Durga and fight against the darkness. According to the Hindu scriptures, demons named Shumbh Nishumbh were vanquished by Maa Durga in the Kaalratri form. When they attempted to demolish the gods' abode, all of the gods turned to the Goddess for assistance. After hearing them, the Goddess turned in her Kaali roop and killed Chand Mund, Shubh Nishumbh's helper. Raktabeej, another demon, then arrived to get revenge. After a struggle, Goddess Chamunda finally killed Shumbh Nishumbh.
