What Mahashivratri teaches couples about marriage

Every year on Mahashivratri, Hindus across the world celebrate the sacred night when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati united in divine harmony. But beyond the rituals, Mahashivratri also teaches us certain timeless lessons about relationships. In current times of swipe-right and short-lived romances, Shiva and Parvati's story shows us that love grows on patience, acceptance, balance, and growth.

So, here are some relationship lessons for today's couples to borrow from Shiva-Parvati:

2/6

Don't chase love

Goddess Parvati didn't chase Lord Shiva for his love and attention. Instead, she performed years of tapasya, to prove her readiness. This wasn't desperation; it was emotional prep.
But, today's love rushes and it skips the foundation. Psychologically, secure attachment needs self-awareness first. Parvati teaches one to become whole alone first, before uniting with your partner or committing in a relationship. So, don't force connection; instead, let it grown organically.

3/6

Acceptance people as they are

Shiva wasn't husband material by Instagram standards - covered in ashes, hanging out in cremation grounds, wearing a snake as jewellery and all. But Parvati saw all of it and chose to stay, never once trying to change him.

But, in modern relationships it is often seen that people try to change each other to suit them. In the long run, this breeds resentment.

Lesson: Instead of changing each other, accepting your partner as they are. Celebrate their uniqueness. Shiva's wild side fueled their power; yours can too. Love isn't molding - it's mirroring souls as they are.

4/6

Equality in partnership

Ardhanarishvara - half Shiva, half Parvati - symbolises perfect harmony: male strength meets female nurture, logic dances with emotion. No hierarchy, just interdependence.

But today's marriages falter on imbalances. While one partner dominates finances, the other dominates in emotions. But equality in marriages/relationships means shared decisions, acknowledged labour, and growing together as a couple.

Psychologically, equitable partnerships report higher satisfaction. Shiva didn't rule Parvati; they amplified each other. Modern couples can learn from them that marriage isn't a conquest. Instead, it is a dance where both partners lead and follow, creating unbreakable bond.

5/6

Space and togetherness

Shiva, the detached ascetic; Parvati, the vibrant life force. Complete opposites, yet seamless together. They shared a cosmic home without ever smothering each other.

Modern couples can learn this idea of space and togetherness from Lord Shiva and Parvati. It teaches one to build deep connection with their partner, while also giving them breathing room.

6/6

Be devoted, not obsessed with your partner

Parvati's devotion towards Shiva was calm tapasya. And Shiva's acceptance of her love was also a conscious decision.
This teaches modern couples to be devoted to each other, instead of being obsessed. While obsession can be misunderstood for passion, it can lead to jealousy and abandonment fears. Whereas, secure love stays steady. Emotionally mature couples choose each other daily, without any ego wars.

Shiva-Parvati's union proves that love isn't perfection - it's partnered evolution. Patience preps, acceptance heals, balance endures. In a time when most connections feel transactional at times, their story teaches us about sacred love. Happy Mahashivratri - grow together.
