Are gum infections limited to mouth only?
About 90% of the population of our country is suffering from gum diseases. Gum infection causes problems related to bleeding gums and tooth decay. But people do not pay attention to other related diseases. According to the studies, gum infection also shows serious effect on other organs of body i.e. heart, kidney, pancreas, respiratory system etc.
Observation in recent years; study after study has shown that people who have poor oral health have higher rates of cardiovascular problems.
In a recent study published in the Journal JACC Clinical Electrophysiology, Researchers found a strong link between Periodontitis (Disease of Gums) and Atrial fibrosis (Disease of Heart). Researchers conducted histological (microscopic) study to establish an association between atrial fibrosis and periodontitis and found that periodontitis is possibly a risk factor for arterial fibrosis. But the researchers found no solid evidence of each other. According to the researchers, more research in needed in this direction.
Previous studies have linked rheumatoid athritis to periodontal diseases (specifically due to infection with bacteria called Porphyromonas Gingivalis). In Addition, a 2018 study found a link between the same bacteria and an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. Studies have linked gum diseases to other serious complication such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Kidney damage and decreased functions of kidney and two way relationship between Diabetes & Periodontitis (with diabetes increasing the risk for periodontitis, and periodontal inflammation negatively affecting Glycaemic control).
Whether the link is direct, indirect or coincidence, a healthy mouth and diet to keep it healthy (including non smoking) can help you keep your teeth, gums and body healthy. Wait for more studies on the connection between oral health and overall health. Until then, keep brushing, and regular visit to your dentist.
