Nostalgic summer vocations

Children always wait for vacations, especially the long summer vacations. They look forward to packing their bags and go out to some unseen destination or I guess to the most known destination, their grandparent’s house be it maternal or paternal (Naani or Daadi). Summer vacations are like annual meet of cousins, relatives and of course grownup siblings who stay in different latitudes and longitude for their livelihood.

When I was a kid, I and my siblings had one destination our Naani’s place. During the summer vacation, it used to be a full house with more than thirty people which consist of my mom’s siblings’ s families and my Nana’s (maternal grandfather) siblings with their kids. Every nook and corner of that sprawling house use to be occupied by someone or other. Elders busy in chitchatting and kids in antics. The whole afternoon we use to spend under the mango or pipal tree playing those games with funny names chorwa k aati paati, chak chak chalni, langad goodia, rang rang party, kho -kho, kabaddi and so many other games which didn’t even have any name. When we use to play saap sidhi (snake & ladder) only four coloured coins were not enough with so many players we had buttons, stones, seeds and even garlic cloves as coins. In the evening antakshari use to be must with riddles and funny stories by our mama (mom’s brother) which use to be same every year but still it made us laugh. We never bothered about facilities and comfort we were just interested in fun which no doubt was unlimited.

Vacations used to be kind of an off for mothers. They could also let their hair down and get a break from the otherwise monotonous routine. Summer vacations created memories for our lifetime. This year due to lockdown no vacations, no addition to memories just wait for the next vacation.
